Use the ATX Switch

Connecting it all up

  • ATX Connector: Connect the ATX connector from the secondary power supply here.
  • Power Connector: Connect a power lead from the primary power supply here. This controls when the secondary supply will power on and off.

Using the power supplies

Just activate the primary supply like normal, the secondary supply will start as soon as the primary supplies 5 volt power.

Indicator LEDs

  • 5v Standby Power/5VSB: Indicates the secondary power supply is supplying 5 volt power for standby functions. This is generally illuminated as long as power is supplied to the second supply.
  • Power OK/PWR_OK: Indicates the secondary power supply is active and stable. Often this will not illuminate until a load has been applied to the secondary supply.
  • Primary Power/MSTR: Indicates the primary power supply is supplying 5 volts and should be activating the secondary supply.

Choosing power supplies

The power supply needs to have a free hard-drive style power connector, it does not need to be an ATX supply, an AT supply or virtually all proprietary supplies (Dell and Apple included) will work fine.

The secondary power supply must be ATX for the correct control signals and ground connections to be made. Using a secondary power supply which is not ATX compliant could result in damage to the secondary supply, the primary supply, the ATX switch, any attached hardware, or all of the above.
