Build a USB7

Now that you have everything, lets assemble a USB7!

Install the 68Ω resistors.

Start with the 68Ω resistors (Blue-Gray-Black-Gold).

Bend them so the leads are almost at right-angles to the body.

Insert them into the locations marked 68. Resistors are not polarized, so you may insert them either way; personally, I like to orient the gold band either to the right or the bottom.

Install the 1.5KΩ resistor.

With the 1.5KΩ resistor (Brown-Green-Red-Gold), bend it's leads and insert it into the hole marked 1.5K.

Install the 10KΩ resistor.

With the 10KΩ resistor (Brown-Black-Orange-Gold), bend it's leads and insert it into the hole marked 10K.

Install the 82Ω resistors.

With the 82Ω resistors (Gray-Red-Black-Gold), install them into the spots marked 82. Three (3) of them belong beside the 10KΩ we just did, the other five (5) belong on the right hand side.

Install the 1KΩ resistors.

With the 1KΩ resistors (Brown-Black-Red-Gold), install them into the spots marked 1K. They are arranged in groups of two: on the far left horizontally, in the middle vertically, and on the right horizontally.

Solder the resistors.

Carefully invert the board so the resistors are against a flat surface.

Solder each lead.

Finally, cut each lead flush with the PCB using your side cutters.

Install the diodes.

Look at the location the diodes will go (in the upper left corner, marked D1 and D2) and bend the diodes' leads to the same width as the hole spacing. Making sure the stripe is aligned with it's mark on the silkscreen (or to the right) install the diodes in the locations marked D1 and D2. You may put either diode in either location.

Solder the diodes and clip their leads.

Install the 28 pin socket.

After aligning the socket's notch with the silkscreen notch on the breadboard (or notch to the left), place the socket in the board.

Flip over and solder. These leads are too short to need trimming.

Install the transistors.

Place all six (6) transistors in the board. Make sure you align the flat side of the transistor with the flat side of the silkscreen marking. You will need to bend the middle pin back to reach the hole.

Solder them and trim their leads back.

Install the displays.

Install all three (3) displays. On all our displays, the decimals should be at the bottom of the display; there is also usually writing on the top side.

Solder the displays in place.

Install the resonator.

Insert the resonator. It will work in either orientation, as long as the center pin is in the center hole.

Solder the three leads and trim them.

Install the ICSP header. (Optional)

If you plan to use a programmer with the board, install the 6 pin ICSP header.

Solder all 6 leads.

Install the USB connector.

Install the USB connector; the little flanges should click into place and lightly hold the connector to the board.

Solder the four pins. Now really solder the two lugs, these are the mechanical connection between the USB socket and the board.

Install the electrolytic capacitor.

Place the capacitor into the board with the long leg on top (or the stripe near the displays).

Solder and trim it's leads.

Install the Atmega48.

Align the chip's notch with the notch on the socket and the board, now insert the chip into the socket. You may need to squeeze the legs into a straighter shape.

Plug in the USB cable!.
